An optometrist is responsible for providing primary vision care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes. They also diagnose and treat eye diseases and conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive eye examinations to diagnose vision problems
• Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids
• Detect and diagnose eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts
• Provide pre and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgery
• Educate patients on proper eye care and hygiene
• Maintain accurate patient records

Skill Sets

• Knowledge of eye anatomy and diseases
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to use diagnostic equipment such as ophthalmoscopes and retinoscopes
• Attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Licensure as an optometrist in the state of practice
